Koala – Phascolarctos cinereus

I took this photograph at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary last week. It is a Koala – Phascolarctos cinereus – and is an Australian wildlife icon. They are however under threat from land clearing and habitat destruction. Loss of habitat and the koala food tree – in the local Lismore are the koalas prefer Eucalyptus tereticornis – Forest Red Gum and Eucalyptus microcorys – Tallowood.

The Australian Koala Foundation has some great information and ways that individuals can help preserve the koala.

Many years ago whilst fishing with my parents and grandparents on the banks of the RIchmond River near Coraki – in this Northern Rivers of NSW where we now live – we came across some wild koalas – this is a photo my dad took at the time. I have been working on a new Australian WIldlife Alphabet for most of this year – this particular koala features!

I will start back posting about my artwork shortly. I am still trying to get things together – sorting out that needs to be done. I need to rearrange some things as well as sort out priorities for my artwork.  Consolidation and a way forward with the extra time I now have seems to be the way to proceed!
