We sometimes get possums visiting our garden at night. The babies can create quite a ruckus with their squawking – especially when their mother decides to leave them alone in one tree whilst she jaunts off to another! This was a fairly recent visitor – it sat quietly in the tree above me looking very sweet. Just don’t tell any New Zealanders I called them sweet! They were introduced in NZ in 1837 to create a fur trade and now there are approximately 70 million of them. They are quite an environmental disaster for NZ, similar to the introduction of the cane toad was for Australia.
Meanwhile in our little garden in Australia they are most welcome!
