Ancient cycad plant species are spectacular. They are the Zamiaceae family endemic to Australia. I can imagine dinosaurs walking amongst & eating these plants, not sure about the seed cones though as they are quite toxic.
I love visiting the South Coast & travelling up the Clyde Mountain and seeing the ground covered in these plants. They have large long palm like fronds that drape over to the ground emerging from a central trunk.
They are particularly spectacular when the seedpods emerge from this central trunk in the centre of the leaves.
Every year around this time my Mum’s ‘Burrawang’ develops a seed pod and this time I was fortunate enough to be there to get some photos. It was just starting to split open, when we go there for Christmas it will probably be collapsed.
I think this particular Burrawang may be Lepidozamia peroffskyana which is a Northern NSW /Southern Queensland coastal species.
